Former Radical Design artist reveals character designs.
Dying for another Star Wars Battlefront? Well, it’s been rumored for quite a while that British developers Free Radical Design, the creators behind the Time Splitters series, was making Star Wars Battlefront III for LucasArts. This would have made it the latest of the battlefield-styled multiplayer Star Wars spin-off. Well it turns out that images have appeared that support that this rumor might have been true, atleast before the company closed down.
Richard Smith, a former employee of Free Radical, provided visual proof. The character renderings were posted on his website and all clearly have a Star Wars Battlefront III watermark in the corner of the image and are dated 2007. They depict several well known characters such as Han Solo, Chancellor Palpatine, a Jawa as well as a few other random characters. The images have since been pulled but German fan site http://swbf3.de was able to save them before they got yanked.
The rumors grew stronger back in July when Amazon.com inadvertently listed it on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, PSP, and DS. No one is sure though whether or not it was in development for all of these platforms of whether it was just an error. Free Radical is now up for sale, combined with the 140 recent layoffs it’s hard to say what will be ahead for Battlefront 3, which was never actually announced officially. However, with the developer closing it‘s doors Gamesindustry.biz reports that the Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron developer, Rebellion, will take over Free Radical’s development duties.
In the meantime you can check out some of the other pictures that leaked. Enjoy! Thank you to IGN, 1up.com and swbf3.de for providing the images.
